Day 86 – 6000km and into Calgary!

We are in Strathmore, just outside Calgary, inside a cafe getting ready to head out in the cold. Where did summer go in the prairies??

We will be getting into Calgary today, and will be staying with Dave and Tracy tonight. Then we’ll be spending about 5 days with my sister and visiting friends in Calgary as we get ready to tackle the Rocky Mountains. My sister will also be taking us around to the Dinosaur Provincial Park and the Dinosaur museum in Drumheller.

We are looking forward to getting on a more popular cycling route from Calgary to Vancouver, as well as down the Pacific Coast (and hopefully warmer weather!).

Thanks for all the comments guys! We gota get back on the road before it starts raining!

Update:

We cycled in the cool weather, but luckily avoided any rain as we headed into Calgary. Traffic was quite heavy on the highway, and we were quite tired from cycling 300km+ over the last couple of days. We got off the Trans-Canada onto highway 1A at Chestermere, which appeared to be a huge and affluent bedroom community for Calgary. They were still building and packing the houses in on the outstretches of the town.

As we got closer to Calgary we had a wide-load warning vehicle pass us. We quickly got off the highway completely to witness a house go down the road shortly after. The shoulder was so wide that we probably didn’t need to get off the highway completely, but we don’t take any chances!

As we got into Calgary the shoulder on the highway completely disappeared, but we managed to quickly get off the road to connect with the city cycling routes which we had researched earlier in the day on the internet. It was very straight forward to get to Dave and Tracey’s as we were able to stay on the bike route the whole way. There were some great panoramic views of the city skyline from certain sections of the bike trail as well, and we were quite impressed with Calgary’s cycling routes. Certain sections are apparently even plowed in the winter for cyclists and walkers!

  2. Hi Guys: Congrats for making it to Calgary! 6000km is 1150km farther than my trip this summer (Van – Ottawa)! Good news….you’ve got some of the nicest scenery yet to come!! The Rockies are splendid (and it’s mostly downhill from Calgary to Vancouver – I said mostly)! Enjoy!
