Day 57 – Rossport to Nipigon

We are in Nipigon tonight. We are off to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park tomorrow and we are planning on taking a rest day there and do some kayaking! After that we will be in Thunder Bay for the weekend.

Our entires for the last few days will be up shortly!

Update from Katherine:

We started the day at the rest area just before Rossport, packing thing up and heading for more hills! We cycled into Rossport in search of water and convinced the marina into letting us fill up our water bottles for free (apparently there is normally a charge for water). We were tempted to take the day off and go kayaking with the local outfitter but decided to press on to Sleeping Giant for the kayaking. We headed up the first of several long climbs (well, not compared to the Rockies but…). Thankfully, the hills were graded and made for decent climbing.

The scenery was absolutely gorgeous today! Steep cliffs and road winding through hills with views of inland lakes and Lake Superior abounded.

Prior to Nipigon, we pulled off at a rest area with a gorgeous view. There we met Tony and Sue and their daughter from Swift Current on there way to Montreal to visit Sue’s relatives by car. They told us all about the prairies and gave us 2 fresh pears. Boy were they good! Thank you!

We biked fairly consistantly all morning and arrived in Nipigon quite hungry around 4pm. We headed straight for Subway and some food. Then off to the grocery to stock up for supper and the next day’s food. The grocery store was an independent grocer and it was really neat to see what products they had. The men at the store even wanted to know about our trip as they had seen us at Subway earlier in the afternoon.

We got direction from a friendly local to the Canadian Tire to pick up some gas for our stove. I was glad we got directions, since the CT was in a super small building with narrow isles (and I mean so narrow that 2 people would have a hard time passing, let alone a cart!).

From the CT, we headed another 3 kms down the highway. We met construction here, and there was no shoulder and a steep drop off and lots of trucks. No fun at all! We cycled when the traffic was empty and got off the road when traffic from both directions came. We arrived to the Stillwater Campground and got a site. The lady at the campground later joked that we should be glad we even had pavement where they were doing construction – apparently it was torn apart for 2 months! The campground was a very nice, reasonable priced campground with laundry, hot showers and Wifi with a little hut to use it in, all of which we took advantage of! I made a super dinner of mashed potatoes, beans and pork chops that we both enjoyed! Bon Soir!
