Day 50 – Rest day in Sault Ste Marie at Velorution

We said goodbye to our fellow touring cyclist friends this morning who were all departing today. We are taking the day off to catch up on our usual chores (laundry etc) and maybe go check out downtown Sault Ste Marie if we have the time (we tried their new Hub trail to try to get to downtown, but it wasn’t completed yet so we gave up).

We had been debating taking the South route through the USA to get across Lake Superior but in the end we decided to tough it out and stick to the North shore in Canada (we are crossing Canada after all!). We had a good chat about both routes with one of the bike mechanics here, and with Erin who did the cycle around Lake Superior with Amanda, and they all said we can’t really go wrong with either route (although the USA route is easier). I really want to see Terry Fox’s memorial so in the end it was an easy choice despite the traffic and the tough hills that everyone has been talking about (although Mark mentioned last night that the road to Terry Fox’s memorial doesn’t allow bicycles or pedestrians – of all roads it seems a little ridiculous!). It’s been really neat talking to everyone about the Northern Ontario route and how different opinions can be, but our general conclusion is that with the right attitude we will be okay. It also sounds like the shores along Lake Superior are just beautiful.

We also heard from Amy and Chris that biking UP Roger’s pass in the rockies in BC could be a little rough with tunnels and the steep hill.  Amy, Chris, and Mark also mentioned roads around Brandon in Manitoba were a little dicey with no shoulder and high speed limits. Both are still a little ways away so I guess we’ll just have to cross that bridge (or road in this case) when we get there.

We are now sitting outside Velorution enjoying our time off and reading their guestbook. The store has now closed and unfortunately so far no one else has arrived so it may be just Katherine and I here tonight. While reading the guestbook we found some amazing entries in their guestbook that we just had to share with you. Here are some of the many:

“May the wind always be at your back,
and the shoulders ever wide.
And may the downhills always be longer than the ups”

“Jay from Vancouver. Heard from others on the road about cool bike shop. Arrived, showered, camped, had fire, drank wine and slept like a baby!”

Entry July 09, 2010:
“No matter where you go in the world, you’ll always find nice people..”

And also:

Entry June 2010
“Je n’ai aucune idee de la date qu’on est ni meme de la journee qu’on est, tout ce que je sais c’est trouve un Bike Shop avec un camping et des gars …”

Rough Translation: ” I have no idea what date it is or even what day of the week, all I know is that I have found a Bike Shop with camping and great people…”

It is amazing the number of people who have stopped by here cycling across the country (or the continent, or the world!). And to think of all the people who went by and didn’t know about Velorution, I’m sure the numbers add up to an incredible amount of people cycling across. We can’t wait to meet more great people. Sometimes you think you are the only ones cycling across, but it is amazing to know there are so many others doing the same thing! One of the staff told us that the other day they had 25 cyclist camping here!

  1. Hi Adam & Katherine:
You met me near Wilberforce, Ontario on July 20. I have been following your progress. You’re doing well. You have a photo of your bikes leaning up against Lake’s Grocery Store in Murray Corner, NB, at the top of your blog pages. I grew up less than a kilometre from there and am going there tomorrow! I think you now see what I mean about Velorution! You really apreciate a shower like that after being on the road for a month or so! Glad to hear you’re taking the tougher Canadian route on Hwy 17. If you’re gonna go across Canada, you’ve got to go this way, even though it is harder. Think of me as you leave Montreal River…..it will be a taste of things to come!
I’d love to meet you guys someday after you get back to the Maritimes to exchange notes.
    Enjoy!!

  2. Hi Dale,
I am amazed you recognized the our picture of our bikes against the grocery store in Murray Corner. That is incredible! We would love to meet up with you when we get back, you were a great inspiration to us. We are still enjoying our time off in Velorution before we tackle the Canadian route!

I think it was the odd colour and the for sale & ice cream signs on the store in Murray Corner that gave me the clue that it was Lake’s store. My cottage is 700 meters east of there. If you’re ever trying to find it, ask any local where it is and they will know.
You’re doing an incredible job on your blog. I don’t know where you find the time and patience to keep up with it all.
Two pieces of advice: Before you leave Velorution in SSM, make sure your bikes are in tip top shape, as there’s nothing for the next 700km to Thunderbay, in terms of a bikeshop. Also, rest up…you’re gonna need it! It flattens out afetr Nipigon but the roads between there and Thunderbay are the worst you will ever ride on in the country! At least you have good bikes that are designed to be tough (not like my trek roadbike I use for touring).
I’ve read every word of every posting of yours and I’m following you guys as you go! Enjoy…it will be over before you know it (remember…you heard that from me)!

  4. Hi Dale, We are in Wawa now but we did find your scribble rom July 12th 🙂 We did get the mechanics to check over our bikes so we are keeping our fingers crossed. The next week to Thunder Bay is going to be a long one I think!

  5. Hi you two honeymooners: I am a religious follower of your blog….wish I was doing this trip again. Have decided that I should do St. John’s to Victoria (East to West) for my 60th birthday present to myself in 10 years! I wanted to ask if you found the great free campsite in Wawa I suggested? Also…did you find any hills between the Sault and Nipigon?
Keep up the good work. My guess is that if you’re still married after a challenging ride like this one, you’re good for a lifetime together! I can’t believe how dedicated you are to your blog. It is usually totally up to date. We had no iphone service (Rogers) for 90% of our whole trip! Even Thunderbay was dead!
We’re cheering for you back East!
We’ve got to get together after you get home to share stories!
    Dale
