Day 9 – Rest day in Grand Sault, NB

Sorry for the lack of updating over the last few days. We’ve been typing up our blog daily (well, almost, we had a little catching up to do) but have been without internet for a while to actually post them.

Today was our first rest day, and it was a good day to rest since our bodies were quite tired from our 120km ride yesterday in the rain, andalso because it was pouring rain this morning. Combine that with Japan playing their last group matches in the afternoon it made no sense not to take the day off since it is the World Cup after all 🙂

We walked around this morning in the rain checking out Grand Falls (coincidentally the main attraction), then took a short ride to check in to another roofed accommodation, the Hill Top Motel. The motel is right at the falls and it looks like it’s been renovated from top to bottom, and it is exceptionally clean. Highly recommended if you are in Grand Falls!

We took the day to do some bike maintenance, which included removing the plastic rear cassette protector on my bike. It’s between the cassette and the rear hub, and mine had to be removed since the plastic had cracked, and it was starting to rub against the cassette. Now taking this piece off without removing the cassette was a huge pain, since cutting or breaking the plastic piece off was very difficult. We tried to remove the rear cassette but didn’t have much luck even with our rear cassette removal tools, so after about what seemed like 2 hours of taking turns cutting with a pocket knife we eventually got it off. Katherine says these plastic protectors always break, so it makes me wonder why they don’t design them better?

Anyway, our plan tomorrow is to bike about 70km to de la République Provincial Park just North West of Edmunston. After that we go off-road on the Trans-Canada trail for a couple of days to Rivière du-Loup. According to the Australian girl we met a couple days ago there is a rustic campsite about halfway on the trail. We are slightly over our accommodation budget by a few nights with the roofed accommodations so the rustic camping will help us out a little. After that we are thinking it’ll take us a couple days to get to Quebec City, then maybe 3~4 days to Montreal.

And for the all important World Cup game? Japan won 3-1 against Denmark, so round of 16 next Tuesday somewhere in Quebec!
