Day 170 – Avila Hot Springs to Lompoc – Hit 10,000km and counting!

We woke up to a rather colder morning. We wanted to jump right back in the hot springs but we had some miles to cover in the limited daylight and had to get back on the road.

Shortly after starting I noticed my cycling odometer was flashing 9999.99km. We had hit 10,000km and the bike computer stopped counting! We stopped and celebrated our big event with a photo. It was hard to believe we had cycled 10,000km over the last 5 and a half months. But we still had some miles to go to our final destination of San Diego (we think about 500km left).

After cycling through some farm land, we arrived at the town of Guadalupe. The town had a very Spanish flavour to it, and it was neat to be in a town with a very southern and Mexican atmosphere.

After having a quick picnic in Guadalupe, we headed through even more farm land. It seemed like it would be very hot and dry place in the summer, as it was warm enough for us to be wearing summer clothes again and it was December.

After a few more hours of cycling, we headed towards a back road recommended by a guidebook, only to learn that it was closed due to construction. We had a sudden sunken feeling, but quickly learned that we’d be able to get back on highway 1 through another back road. Once we made it through the back road back on to highway 1, we started the 700ft climb over the mountains. I saw a small roadkill that turned out to be a dead Mountain Lion by the side of the highway.

We cycled by the US Air Force Vandenberg Base, which happens to be the Air Force Space Command center. After getting over the hills, we descended down to the town of Lompoc. We were both feeling quite fatigued and decided to recuperate indoors at a Starbucks. We decided at this point that instead of camping we would spend the night indoors at a motel to rest up after many days of camping through the cold nights. We found that we really appreciate the small things in life now, like a roof over our head, a real bed, and an actual hot shower (as opposed to the California State Park’s definition of hot) 🙂
