We have been without internet for the last week but we have been typing up our entries diligently this past week (we just need to find the time to post them as we are in a bit of a rush right now). It’s been very cold at night but brilliantly sunny during the day. Forecast looks like it will be warming up as we head closer to L.A.!
Today we are headed towards the Pismo Beach Area. We are about a week and a half away from L.A., and about 2 weeks away from San Diego!
Update:
We started the day again with a fire-pit all set up form the night before, requiring only one flick of a match to get it going.
Once we got back on the road we first stopped at the town of Cayucos. It was a windy day and we had a strong headwind getting into the town. We found a nice sunny and sheltered spot to have our morning snack in front of a jewellery store that was yet to open for the day. The signed said they were only open Wed to Sunday. Although it was Wednesday, for some reason I thought it was Monday and thought nothing else of it until the owner came to open the store. He was very nice and told us not to worry and that we could finish our food while he opened his store.
He invited us into the store and we learned his name was Tim. We had a nice long chat and he recommended a few stops for the day for us, one including the Avila Hot Springs. Our guidebook only had a small mention about it so we weren’t thinking of stopping there, but after Tim’s description we decided to make it our stop for the night! Tim went out of his way and marked up a tourist guide map so that we knew exactly where it was.
We said good bye to Tim and headed out towards the town of Moro Rock. We were now headed South and the head wind we had was now a tail wind. After Moro Rock we came out to a vast valley. We made great time on the flat gradual down hill road with the tail wind. It was very warm and we had to delayer to our summer clothes. Apparently in the summer temperatures in the valley can easily reach 90 to 100 F.
We arrived at the Avila Hot Springs campground around 3PM. We quickly set up camp and finished dinner by 4PM and headed over to the hot springs. The campground/resort had built a few cooler pools and a big hot tub that cooled the 180 F hot springs water to 104 F. You could smell the sulphur from the hot springs in the air, but we spent a good 3 hours hanging out at the hot springs. We even managed to get our laundry done. We saw many locals come and go while we sat in the hot springs. and since it was the campground’s ‘Wednesday night movie night’, we saw the beginning of a movie while we sat in the hot springs (we didn’t make it past the first 15 min.. it was a few hours after sunset and the movie was also not the best!).
We fell asleep in our tent feeling completely rejuvenated! Hot springs are truly a cyclist’s best friend.
