It was a very cold night, and a very cold morning. We packed up and had breakfast as quickly as we could, and headed to the lodge with our bikes to warm up before hitting the road.
Once we did hit the road and were away from the shade of the damp Redwoods, we quickly warmed up in the sun as we started the climb out of Big Sur. We quickly had to delayer 4 layers of clothing.
We had a fantastic day of cycling in very nice weather. We were passed by what I initially thought were snow-plows. We then came upon a sign stating that Highway 1 was closed in 50 miles! We didn’t know why, but thought that it could have been due to a landslide or an accident. We weren’t sure what was ahead for us, but since we were only going 28 miles today and it was out of our control anyway we continued on.
We passed through some land slide areas where the road was reduced to one-lane and construction crews were working on building a new by-pass bridge or fixing the roads.
We then arrived at the town of Lucia (basically one-building complex of a restaurant, small store, and a few rental cabins). Lucia was the only place to get food supplies for the day. There I met a couple who was interested in our trip. I asked them about the Highway 1 closure, and they said they had actually just come from that direction and the highway was now open as a one lane road. It was apparently a crime scene due to a police car chase of drug dealers involving hostages from the night before!
We stocked up at the small store which was the most expensive grocery store we had been to so far on our trip. It was obviously a place only a desperate and hungry touring cyclist would shop at..
We continued on a little further to our campground. I saw what looked like an Orca in the water below. When we arrived at Kirk Creek we were blown away by how scenic and beautiful the campground was. It was right on the water with a beautiful view of the ocean. Best of all the individual hiker/biker sites were tucked away from the other sites, and had a great view. Just as the volunteer at the state park a few days ago had said, this was one of the best hiker/biker sites on the entire coast!
We had 3 hours before sunset so we thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon relaxing, mostly cooking and eating. The camp host came to chat to us around sunset and we enjoyed chatting to him. We had fried eggs, mashed potatoes, and avocado for dinner, and banana chocolate pancakes for dessert with hot chocolate. I also had a full box of Kraft dinner as an appetizer/late lunch.
