Day 147 – Humboldt Redwoods State Park to Leggett

We woke up to find out that it had not rained over night and our tent was dry. Rob started a fire with the firewood that we had packed away in the food cabinet. We packed up quickly and were ready to go a little after 7AM (the time change makes it early). The campground host stopped by to wish us a safe journey.

As we were about to head out, we felt droplets of rain so we donned our rain gear. It was a cool morning with the temperatures in the 40s (F), the coldest it had been since we had left the Rockies. We dressed in several layers to stay warm. We continued to cycle through the majestic Redwoods as we headed South. There was hardly any traffic on the road and we were able to enjoy the the ride.

We then came across a humongous Redwood that had fallen over. It’s stump was so large, and hollow, that we were able to climb inside. Would have made a nice dry place to sleep!

We stopped in the town of Miranda to grab a quick bite to eat at the local market. A local man stopped by and he wished us well. Shortly after the Avenue of the Giants ended and we had to return to highway 101. The rain increased and we were starting to get quite wet. We took the exit for Garberville to stop for lunch. We met another touring cyclist with Bob trailer near the visitor centre, but unfortunately he only acknowledged us very quickly and continued on.

We had lunch at a local cafe called ‘Flavors’. Katherine had a big salad, Rob a couple sandwiches, and I had some chowder. As we were getting ready to leave, a couple locals chatted to us about our trip and wished us well on our journey in the rain. By this time the rain had intensified and it was pouring outside. We decided to wait a few minutes for the rain to light up, and when it did, we headed out towards our destination of Leggett.

We rode through some heavy rain, taking back roads when we could as per our guidebook. Traffic was courteous but we became quite drenched, even our rain gear was not enough to keep us dry. Camping outside was starting to look like a dire option. When we arrived at the tourist stop called “Confusion Hill”, we noted a motel/cabin/campground and decided to stop to ask how much roofed accommodation would be, and if there was any other options towards our destination of Leggett, 6 miles down the road.

The owner was quite nice, and she also happened to be from the UK (same as Rob). There were no cheap cabins or our favourite yurts, but they did have a room in a large cabin that we decided to take.

We were soaking wet when we entered our room, but we were able to dry out everything with their heater, and are now finally dry and warm again. Also we made great progress in catching up on our blog 🙂  (All caught up except for a few entries from Oregon!)

It’s still raining outside (even after 7 hours since we arrived), but the forecast looks good for the next 10 days as we get back closer to the coast. It’s supposed to warm up quite a bit as well. Time for rest as we have a 2000ft climb of Legett Hill (highest point of our Pacific Coast route) first thing tomorrow morning!
