It’s been beautifully sunny when we are slightly inland, but the coast has been engulfed in a very thick fog for the last two days. The sun came out and blasted away the fog when we arrived in Crescent City. It later rolled in again as we were grocery shopping. It was amazing to see the fog roll in and cover the entire coastal route as we watched from the shore.
We cycled about 55km today and decided to split a motel room with our friend Rob and take it easy for the rest of the day. We have a big climb out of Crescent city tomorrow so we should be well rested for it.
We haven’t had an actual rest day since the big storm hit us while we were in Aberdeen, WA, but we are planning on taking it slow and keep on cycling. We expect to do some hiking in the Red Wood Forrest in the next couple of days. Updates to be posted shortly!
Update from Katherine:
We left Harris Beach State Park this morning and sadly said goodbye to our last yurt! We cycled through the very flat terrain into California and enjoyed being filmed a bit by Rob. At the Calfornia border, we took pictures at the “Welcome to California” sign and passed the agricultural inspection station with flying colors.
Shortly after, we turned off the main road and followed back roads into Smith River. We saw a herd of farmed elk and passed Mexicain labourers in the field on this sort of human rolling device. A quick stop at the Smith River store and we were off again!
We enjoyed the flat roads into Crescent City and did some sightseeing as we came into the city. We also witnessed a toddler wander into the middle of the road…very exciting! As we tried to decided which motel to stay in, we had some interesting conversations with the locals!
We managed to get a nice motel on the edge of town called the Anchor Inn. We throughly enjoyed our motel room, despite the lukewarm hot tub, and felt relaxed and rejuvenated the next morning after long hot showers and microwave meals!
