Day 136 – Cape Lookout to Beverly Beach

We had a steep climb out of Cape Lookout up and over the three capes. It was a quiet road, so we mostly enjoyed it. At Cape Kiwanda, we stopped in the brilliant sunshine to walk on the beach. We climb up onto the cape and looked out at the sandstone formed by the angry waves of the Pacific Ocean. As we headed back around the cape, we saw our first surfers in the cold waters!

After the scenic drive, the road was shaded from the beach by trees and the miles passed quickly. In Lincoln City, we stopped to buy groceries and left to follow the “suggested detour” around highway 101 in the city. Adam’s right front rack promptly sheared off one of it’s bolts. We quickly repaired the situation; however, as we had learned to put in longer bolts so that we could remove them from the rivet without much fuss (although I’m pretty sure that it was not the use envisioned by the cable cutter makers). The hills on the “detour” through Lincoln City were ridiculous…I have never seen such steep grades on city streets! We decided to cut back to the highway, figuring that it couldn’t be much worse. It was fine, and we made our way out of the city safely.

We continued south until Depoe Bay, enjoying views of the coast along the way. We stopped to do some whale watching and actually saw whales! It was very exciting.  A women stopped us on the road and advised us to take the Otter Creek Rd detour instead of climbing Cape Foulweather’s hill on the highway. We weren’t going to take it, due to our last experience with highway detours, but changed our minds with her advise.

Boy were we glad we listened. The detour was phenomenal, probably some of the best cycling I have ever done. The road started out 2-ways, then turned to a one-way road with a specific cycling lane that hugged the cliffs in this very rugged area. The sun was getting low in the sky and the wind was calm and it was gorgeous! At the Cape Fouldweather lighthouse, we met a group of hikers who were quite excited about our trip. We enjoyed meeting them and chatting and gave out our blog address. They said it was the only time they had ever been there when it had been both calm and sunny!

From there, we headed to the Beverly Beach State Park. We had prepared ourselves for full yurts and that was was we found. We headed up the hill, away from the regular campers for the hiker/biker site and made camp. An absolutely fantastic day on the Oregon Coast!
