We were up early again to try and get some miles in. We rode out from Deception Pass and along Whitby Island to Oak Harbor. There we made a quick Starbuck stop to warm up and use the internet. We met a touring cyclist who cycled from Alaska (his home) and was also headed to San Diego but he quickly left us in the dust. In Oak Harbor, the folks at Starbucks were very nice, and one man even commented that his wife was from PEI as I had my jersey on. We had a quick chat about the island.
We checked out the touristy Couperville and picked up groceries. The locals told us we needed to get out of there before it rained! We headed to the ferry dock and waited about 1 hour for the ferry. After another lovely crossing and buying fuel in Port Townsend, we headed down the Hood Canal to Dosewallips State Park. This area is very rural and cuts down the east side of the Olympic Peninsula. The towns looked very run down and in rough shape, perhaps due to the recession.
All of the campgrounds in the Olympic National Forest were closed, so we had to really push it to Dosewallips Park on the far side of Brinnon. Here, we decided to stay in a regular side, right beside the restrooms. We set up the tent, and blissfully fell asleep.
At 2:30am…the raccoons made their appearance. I woke up as Adam was exiting the tent at high speed to chase them away. I have never seen him move so fast from a sleeping position! We had to get up and tree the food at the late hour. Lesson learned, we will get back to our habit to tree our food from now on!
