Day 128 – Orcas Island to Deception Pass

Just wanted to let you guys know we are currently in Oak Harbor, Washington for a quick stop. We haven’t had internet for a while since we have been staying at the State Parks. We toured the San Juan Islands and are now headed south-west towards the town of Aberdeen and the Pacific Ocean. We are trying to beat the rainy season but we are cutting it close so we are keeping our fingers crossed! Update to be posted shortly.

Update from Katherine:

We were up early this morning, prior to the sunrise, to start climbing Mount Constitution on our bike. We left our gear at the bottom and climbed to the top. It took 1 hour so we missed the sunrise but the view was well worth it. It looked like we were floating above the clouds on an island of green! They had a neat viewing tower as well. Adam took lots of pictures and we had some breakfast. We had now accomplished a right of passage for local cyclists!

After heading back down in 15 minutes, we packed out and headed back to the ferry dock. In Eastsound, we met another touring cyclist. We had a quick chat with him and later met up with him again at the dock. He offered us a spot to stay that night, but it wasn’t quite where we were headed. Thank you for the generous offer! We have forgotten his name…

Adam had some clam chowder and I had a great coffee at the dock as the fog had rolled in. We definitely enjoyed the ferry right, warm and dry with tables to eat at and bathrooms! I think my standards have gotten pretty low!

After the ferry we made the tour of Washington Park. This was a really narrow road with lots of climbing…I was tired and didn’t really appreciate it but Adam enjoyed the views. I was pretty quick around the point and ended up at a viewpoint with a group of people on Harleys. They were jokingly offered to have towed Ada, had they known I was waiting for him.

After this we headed for Deception Pass following the route in our guidebook. It was a good ride until we got to the bridge over Deception Pass. This was hairy as there was no shoulder and lots of traffic. We stopped halfway through to check out the whirlpool and the boat fighting up the current at the entrance to the pass.

We stopped shortly after at Deception Pass State Park, tired out after our climbing in the morning. We camped at the hiker-biker sites, even the campground was empty. This was not such a good idea at they were a very long walk from the running water and bathrooms. The showers here took tokens but there was no way to buy them, the entire place being unmanned! In desperation, I heated some water and “showered” in the shower!
