Day 127 – San Juan Island to Orcas Island

Today was amazing. We had sunny skies all day. We headed out early to check out Lime Kiln Point State Park. This park is a prime whale watching area as a very deep strait passes close to land. We stayed at the lookout point for a while and saw a couple of whales (as promised) , seals and seabirds. The seals and the seabirds appeared to be arguing a bit over the fish in the seaweed-filled tidal area. We took a short walk out to the lighthouse and Adam got some nice pictures.

After that, we headed to the American camp of the Pig War between the British and the Americans over the San Juan Island. The American camp was well preserved and we took the “historical walk”, full of signs telling you was you were looking at in the ruins. The was a beautiful view from the redoubt. All of this built for a war with only one casualty…the pig who was grazing in the wrong spot.

We headed out to Cattle Point, a beautiful overlook at the very southern tip of the island. The road getting there clung to the prairie hills that fell into the sea…amazing!

After cattle point we made for Friday Harbor to catch the ferry to Orcas Island, hitting the grocery store again. We caught the ferry, a much smaller boat this time and land on Orcas Island. We cycled up to Moran State Park, planning to dump our bags and climb Mount Constitution in the evening. We were a bit late getting in and decided to camp and climb the mountain early in the morning.

The campground was once again gorgeous, right on a Lake, although we did face some confusion about the hiker-biker vs. regular site and finally picked a regular site.  The showers took quarters, which of course we had none. Since we had not had a shower the night before, we were eager to have one. Adam set out on his bike as I started dinner and managed to beg some quarter off a local cyclist. Thank you!! We enjoyed the shower!
