A reflection on our trip across Canada, and the start of our second journey, down the Pacific Coast

Tomorrow marks the beginning of our trip down the Pacific Coast towards Mexico. We will be departing Victoria and be heading towards the San Juan Islands in Washington, crossing the border in the the United States.

It feels a little surreal to have finally finished crossing Canada. It is by far the longest trip we have ever taken, and looking back, it is hard to believe you can actually travel across such a vast area on just a bicycle. There were many tough days that questioned what we were doing, especially when the weather turned for the worst around the prairies. We just wanted to get out of the wind, the rain, and/or the cold, or just stop having to exert ourselves to get to where we needed to go that day. The misery of being out in the vast open with nowhere to hide from the weather, the many hills we had to climb with 80lbs of gear on our bikes, the constant struggles with road conditions and traffic, and always on the hunt for a place to get food and a place to pitch our tent – preferably with clean running water, a picnic table, and a hot shower after a long day of riding. Not to mention the mosquitoes that want to ruin your chance to have a peaceful meal after a rough day. Makes you wonder why anyone would choose to put themselves through this by choice.

We got to see some spectacular scenery, and have landed up in very neat places meeting very friendly and kind people along the way. We had no idea how the trip would have unfolded, but in the end we had an incredible adventure. We can’t wait to head down the pacific coast!
