Day 112 – Peachland to Hedley

We had a wonderful rest last night, throughly enjoying our nice campground. Todd’s RV park is right on the water and has nice bathrooms and hot water to do dishes with! What more could a touring cyclists want! We cooked up breakfast and sat on a bench by the water enjoying it in the sunshine. We felt much better than we did yesterday arriving frustrated and tired.

The day was gorgeous and our route took us along Lake Okanagan towards Penticton. We made a quick stop at a roadside fruit stand for some amazing pears and continued our way down the gorgeous road. As we neared Penticton, we stopped in Summerland to get groceries, as I knew that the grocery stores in Penticton were on the far side of town.

In Penticton, we enjoyed lunch by the water and I showed Adam where the Ironman Canada swim course and run course finish were. I had finished Ironman Canada last August and was eager to show him around.

We took the main road through Penticton until we spotted a bike path off to the right, which we quickly joined. We followed it until the water at Lake Saha, where I pointed out the campground where I had stayed for Ironman Canada, South Beach Gardens….a very nice spot.

Out of Penticton, we headed towards Keremeos. There was a bit of a climb out of Penticton that increased to quite a large climb up to Yellow Lake on Hwy 3A. I had decended this climb on the Ironman course and hadn’t remembered it being quite so long or steep. Adam was slowed by his sore knee but he was a bit incredulous that we had actually raced on this road for the Ironman. After the climb to Yellow Lake, we made a quick rest stop at the gas station at the top. The decent from the Yellow Lake to Keremeos was spectacular, if a tad cold. I now know why I was so tired by the time I climbed it last year for the Ironman! The sun curled around the mountains that got more and more lush the lower you went.

In Keremeos, there were lots of fruit growing operations and fruit stands. We mad a quick stop and bought some produce for our dinner and snacks. We also bought this amazing cheese rosemary bread…yum!

We decided to try to make it to Hedley before dark as we were on a bit of a schedule due to an invitation for turkey dinner in Port Moody on the 10th. We cycled frantically towards Hedley. Unfortunately, our GPS showed a campground that turned out to be for seasonal residents only. We kept cycling, and eventually stopped when we saw a hand painted sign saying “rustic camping”. We were definitely in need of a spot to stop, so we descended the rough dirt road to near the river. The campground had a flush toilet and creek water that you had to boil. It was definitely rustic! We were the only ones there but quick set up camp and made dinner as the sun set! Adam made a nice fire but I was too tired to really enjoy it (this is a chronic problem for us!) It was quite cool overnight but we still slept well.
