We did not have the smoothest start to the day. We had planned on taking the Kettle Valley Railroad Trail to Pentincton, but we were naive to think that the climb and access to the trail would be paved and easier than the section we had went up in a vehicle on the weekend. It was basically a 800m climb on a dirt rode that wasn’t in great condition. Definitely not easy on a loaded touring bike with our 28mm tires (we wished the lady at the tourist office mentioned this part!). We also met a few people driving down who told us that the section of the trail was very soft and difficult to bike without a mountain bike. About halfway up we had to give up. The worst part was there was no way to get to Penticton on the side of the lake we were on, so we had to bike all the way back to Kelowna! Although it was downhill going back, we were very disappointed. We had spent 3 to 4 hours cycling and had gone no where! The only consolation was that we had a nice view from where we had climbed to.
We eventually made it to Peachland after climbing even more hills. There was a beautiful campground right beside the lake. The person also gave us a special hiker/biker rate of $20 which was much appreciated after a tough day. We had asked about bears in the area, and he said the first bear they had all year was there the morning before, but was more interested in the salmon in the river than the campground. We had heard on the news before that they had an incredible salmon run in the area this year. We went to check out the creek later on and saw several dead salmon floating in the water with many ducks and seagulls having a feast.
