We had breakfast in the lovely enclosed cooking shelter at the campground. After cycling for a few hours with the great tail wind, we arrived at the best rest stop we had been to on the entire trip. It was managed by a third party company, and it was sheltered, heated, spotlessly clean and a place to sit inside. What more could you ask for? It was fantastic. We hung out for a good 30min as we ate some of our food. We ended up chatting with a couple people who were interested in our trip. One of them said that there used to be a lot more of these rest stops but the Government had been closing them down?
We continued on, and after a few hours arrived at a gas station for a quick stop. There we had met a nice man who we had a nice chat with. He was really interested in our trip and had many encouraging words.
The sky was rather dull, and we kept pushing towards Strathmore. At one point a bee had flown into Katherine’s shirt’s collar, and she ended up getting stung by it on the back of her neck. Thankfully Katherine isn’t allergic to bees but she had a sore sting for a while.
When we arrived in Strathmore we stopped by the grocery store to stock up on food (basically a daily occurrence for us). We knew there had to be a campground in town according to the Alberta map, but we weren’t sure where. We got some directions from the locals but they were not really clear. In our quest for the campground we biked by their schools. These were all brand new and very impressive schools, from elementary, to junior high, to the high school. They were all brand new!
We eventually manged to find the campground. To our surprise it was packed with RVs. We later figured out that many people were living here all year, likely do to the affordability or lack of vacancies in the city. The water pipes were insulated for some of the RVs, and even the RVs had insulation around certain sections. We were quite tired after another 150km+ day and promptly fell asleep with our tuques on in the tent as it was another cool night!
