Day 81 – Morse to Swift Current

We have arrived in Swift Current after a relatively uneventful ride. We will be staying with Tony and Sue tonight who we had met at a rest stop in Northern Ontario and were very kind to have invited to their house. Updates to follow!

Update:

We woke up in the cool temperatures and had fried granola for breakfast. The lady that collected the campground fees and who we had a nice chat with the night before stopped by during breakfast. Except instead of a nice chat, she had stopped by to ask if we noticed the broken tap handle in the women’s washroom. Katherine mentioned that she noticed it when she used it the first time since it was strange, but the lady insisted that it wasn’t broken when she was there the night before. Katherine explained to her that it was already like that but the lady insisted that it wasn’t and stormed out of the campground accusing Katherine. We could not believe what had just happened! We have no idea what she was basing her accusations on or what kind of ‘tap handle inspections’ she actual does everyday when she goes into the bathrooms, but we were very disappointed to have been treated like liars. What was even more strange was that she didn’t even talk to the RV’ers who were camping next to us!

Our stay in Morse was very nice up to this point (except for the loud trains… but not is a part of prairie camping right beside the tracks), so it was really unfortunate we encountered such an experience right at the end. We tried to not let it get to us as it was just one person after all who was probably just having a bad morning (and going around accusing innocent cyclists!). Besides, it was a $4 tap handle, and why would Katherine go around breaking tap handles and then lie about it??

After loading up on groceries we headed to the local coffee shop to grab a drink and check our e-mail. While we sat on their comfy chairs I decided to go to the counter to ask for their internet password. That’s when the girl at the counter said the internet was only for customers who had bought something. Obviously Katherine and I no longer look like regular people, but are apparent tap breaking wifi stealing criminals! After the misunderstanding we checked our e-mail but the whole experience of the day reminded me of Malcolm Gladwell’s book called “blink”. His inspiration to write the book came from the different treatment he started to get from people (including the local police) when he had let his hair grow long!

After the coffee shop we headed to Tony and Sue’s place. They greeted us with open arms and made us feel comfortable right away. We met their other daughter Lisa (Julie who we had met before was called into work at the last minute). We had first met Tony, Sue and Julie at a Ontario rest stop as they were headed east to Montreal. We chatted about our trips and how the last couple weeks had gone by. They cooked us an amazing meal (with so much food that we could no longer eat), and then took us out to Sask Landing Provincial Park. The area was like a hidden oasis, with incredible scenery. Words or even my pictures don’t do it justice. It was a place that we would not have seen on our bike trip since it was 50km off to the North of Swift Current, which means it would have been an entire day detour for us. It was nothing like the stereo-typical view we had of the prairies of flat land. This area was a huge valley with a large beautiful lake, and there were so many steep hills everywhere!

On our way back to Swift Current we could see lighting off to the distance. It was incredible to see the lightning in the vast sky. It almost seemed like natural fireworks.

When we got back to Swift Current it was already dark, but they drove us around and gave us a tour of the entire town. Later on we even went to the hospital (where Sue works as a nurse) and Sue gave us a tour for Katherine. The hospital was brand new and it was very nice (and that is coming from someone who would do a lot to stay away from hospitals).

When we returned to their home they made us a delicious cake with fresh berries to cap off a wonderful evening.
