Day 75 – Grenfell to Indian Head

We are currently at a rest stop in Wolseley. We had a very slow start to the day as we tried to recover from yesterday. We were also trying to wait out the rain, but as soon as we got going it started to rain! We have a slight tail wind again today which is nice and it has stopped raining so our spirits are good (although it is still 10 degrees C and the winds are blowing from the NNE). We are planning on taking it easy today, and probably only bike 50km to Indian Head. There is a KOA campground there and we should have internet so we can catch up on our posts since we have fallen a little behind.

Both Katherine and my back tires need to be replaced. The yellow wear indicator started to show for at least the last 1000km now. We originally thought it was just yellow paint that we had both ran over, but it is now all around our tire. It was only last Friday when we realized that they are actually wear indicators! We ordered a couple replacements right away through a bike shop in Regina on Friday and it is supposed to take 2 to 3 business days to arrive. So they should be there on either Tues, Wed, or maybe even Thursday. We’ll be taking a rest day in Regina (maybe two or three depending on when the tires show up). We got the Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires that we originally wanted this time. The Continental Touring Plus Tires lasted 5000+ km, but we hear the Schwalbe tires should last even longer (10,000km?) so hopefully we won’t have to replace them again. The front tires are still in good shape so we probably won’t need to replace them until Vancouver,or maybe they will last until the rest of the trip. We didn’t bring any spare tires as they were hard to pack, so we are glad we only have another 100km to go!  The  TCH shoulder has been excellent since Virden, MB, so we think it won’t cause too much more wear, but we are keeping our fingers crossed!

Update:

We have arrived in Indian Head. As we pulled into the gas station we met a nice couple from Saskatoon who had just completed a motorcycle tour of Eastern Canada and the US. We had a very nice chat about campgrounds and our trips. We failed to get each other’s names but we gave them our blog address so hopefully they’ll check us out!

We probably could have gone all the way to Regina but we decided to call it a day. After leaving Wolseley we immediately got caught in another little rain fall. We put our rain gear back on and had a relatively easy ride with a slight tail wind and flat roads again.

Indian Head is actually where many scenes from the CBC show “Little Mosque on the Prairie” was filmed. It is a very prairie town with a few grain towers and the train (we can actually hear it going by right now – ear plugs are required at night!).

The KOA campground that we are staying at tonight is very nice. Tomorrow we are planning on an early exit to avoid the rain as it is supposed to start raining again in the afternoon. We only have another 60km to Regina with no headwind so it should be an easy ride again.
