Day 61 – Rest day in Thunder Bay

We slept in and had a slow start to our rest day. I started some much needed laundry, including washing our sleeping bags (thank goodness)! I headed out in the afternoon to get a new seatpost for my bike as mine was too short. I received excellent service at Cyclepath at 831 May St. and was in and out of there in 20 minutes. They even gave me direction to Starbucks, where I had the latte that I have been thinking about since the Sault! Extra hot please!

Thank you Cyclepath!

Thunder Bay is really progressive when it comes to cycling, with bike lanes and an enthusiastic community of cyclist. They even have the bike lanes in the tourist guide, something cities many times larger sometimes can’t manage. I picked up some essentials and headed back to the university. Adam had been furiously working on the blog the whole time.

We relaxed for the afternoon and headed out in the evening to try and get some sushi. We went to 2 sushi restaurants who advertised on the internet as being open until 10pm on Sundays and found them both closed. We picked something up at Safeway for dinner and enjoyed our last night inside for a while!

Tomorrow we are planning on getting on Hwy 102 to the Hwy 11 and 17 junction. From there we are going to take the less traveled road of Hwy 11 West to Fort Frances. We have talked to a few cyclists and the Hwy 17 stretch to Kenora is quite rough with little to no shoulder and is much busier with traffic. Hwy 11 is much more remote but a lot less traffic is what we have heard. It adds about 75 km to our trip, which is roughly a day’s worth of biking. It is about 570km to Kenora so we will likely be without internet or cell coverage for a while (about a week)!
