Before Henri left in the morning we got a quick photo with him. Our ride was smooth, with little wind and traffic. We came across many beautiful lakes. We then noticed that the forest started to look very strange. We later learned that there was a massive forest fire here in May of 1999 (known as Wawa #5). They had to close the TCH a few times, and they say that depending on the winds, the entire town of White River could have been destroyed. This was all caused by a few cigarette butts from a couple of rail way workers!
We stopped by a little rest area to the turn off to Manitouwadge. They were trying to promote Manitouwadge as a retirement and tourist destination (there used to be a large mine there that closed down).
Speaking of mines, this area Ontario in the Canadian shield is well known for its minerals. We ended up coming across Canada’s largest gold mind (one of the largest in North America) – shown in our pictures.
A little further down the road we ran into Thomas and Yvonne from Germany. They were cycling from Vancouver to New York. We got a picture of them climbing the big hill to come see us. They too, had Ortlieb panniers, but I guess you can say that it wasn’t much of a surprise, since they are made in Germany! We shared some great tips about upcoming camping spots.
We eventually made it to the town of Marathon (where we noted gas prices at $1.18 per litre but don’t matter to us too much 🙂 ). Katherine had read about their newly renovated municipal campground before, so we headed straight there. It was on a beautiful lake in their town park, and being newly renovated it was fantastic. Their price was also very reasonable at $24 (especially compared to the $38 they charge at Ontario Parks! Have we mentioned that before? 😉 ). And they had great sites for tenters! We were the first ones there, but the campground filled up a little afterwards. We met a nice couple from Nova Scotia travelling with their RV. Later on in the day the fog rolled in from Lake Superior and drastically changed the look of the park (which was really neat). We also met our neighbour Muskrat looking like creature who lived by a tree on our site. He was incredibly fast. I don’t think we had ever seen an animal move so quickly! We had a little fire by the lake and called it a night.
