Just a quick update to let you know that we have made it to Wawa, ON. Our parents have been telling us there are many stories of hitch hikers getting stuck in this town of Wawa.
We have had absolutely no cell coverage since we left Sault Ste Marie, and since we had been staying at the Provincial Campgrounds we have been without internet as well to update our blog. Luckily this campground in Wawa has internet but we don’t quite have the energy to catch up completely on our blog tonight (so stay tuned). This campground is one of the “Good Sam Campground” chains so it is quite nice. What is great is that for the first time for us the tenters get the best sites by the river (usually it is always the RVer’s!). We had quite a few RV’ers come down for a walk to check out the view and they stopped and chatted to us about our trip.
Most people cycle the stretch from Sault Ste Marie to Wawa in two days (some even one), but we decided to take three. The first reason was that we had quite the headwind during the last two days as soon as we hit Lake Superior (Northwesterly winds across the massive lake). But an actual fact is this area is so beautiful we wanted to enjoy it, and if we pushed ourselves too hard we wouldn’t have the time or energy to appreciate it as much. Also since the towns/campgrounds are so far apart, if we committed to keep going and we don’t make it, there would be no hot shower for the night as we’ll be camping in the bush. That’s not so bad on warm days but it’s been absolutely frigid at night and in the morning the past few days, and wavy Lake Superior unfortunately hasn’t been too enticing to us for a swim (which is too bad because all the cyclist we had met in Sault Ste Marie said they had a beautiful swim when it was warmer last week).
We stopped at the Agawa Bay Rocks in this morning to check out the ancient pictographs on the face of the rock cliffs right by the lake. They were very fascinating and I was amazed that they had been found or that they hadn’t faded further since they are exposed to the waves. The waves were relatively calm in the morning and allowed us to view the pictographs rather safely. They are in a perilous location, and if it is too wavy you pretty much can’t get to them as you would be swept away by the powerful waves (the warning sign there says that it has happened).
The traffic was much heavier today (particular transport trucks) compared to the last two days. The last two days were so quiet maybe we had just become spoiled, but the sudde increase in truck traffic in our direction was a little odd.
Also unlike the past two days we actually had a great tail wind today that helped us up several hills. And the downhill to Wawa was just incredible. It seemed to just go on forever. We were glad we didn’t have to climb it in the other direction!
Our plan tomorrow is to bike to White River. The towns are so spread apart in this stretch that we are pretty much just biking from one town to the first available town or campground (90km+ or so apart usually). On Monday we are planning on going from White River to the town of Marathon. After that we are planning on taking two days to make it to Sleeping Giant Provincial park for a rest day before heading into Thunder Bay.
That’ll have to be it for tonight. We are going to try to get up early tomorrow to beat the traffic (we are hoping Sunday morning has got to be quiet?). We may not have internet again for the next little while, but the next time we do we should be all caught up with our posts!
