Day 51 – Sault Ste Marie to Pancake Bay

We headed away from Velorution this morning…a bit sad to leave the oasis but feeling recharged and restocked. We followed their suggested route out of the city, staying on Old Garden City Rd and then Landslide Rd. This kept us off the super busy “Great Northern Rd” through the center of town. Velorution is pictured below if you are ever on the lookout for it.

The backroads were nice and we made reasonable time, stopping at a rural elementary school for a snack. We turned back on the Highway 17 and were greeted by a sign telling us that Wawa is 212kms away. We cycled on, stopping for a quick lunch at a rest area. After lunch I wasn’t feeling well so we stopped at the Batchwana vistor’s centre to recover a bit. We were facing a stiff headwind off the lake and decided to turn in at Pancake Bay Provincial Park.

Prior to the Park, we came to the Pancake Bay store, a tourist centre and the only gas station before Wawa (or so we thought). We picked up a huge piece of Smoked Lake Trout for dinner.

The Provincial Park was beautiful, right on a big sandy beach on Lake Superior. There were interesting information panels about Lake Superior and its climate at the park. There was also a map showing many of the shipwrecks in the lake. They say Lake Superior is so large it creates its own weather. It wasn’t long off the coast of Pancake Bay that the famous Edmund Fitzgerald had sunk in 1975 (more people have been made aware by it in recent times by Gordon Lightfoot’s famous song). It’s unbelievable that even such a large ship could have sank in this lake. There have been many sinkings and many tragedies.

The smoke trout we had was very delicious (the water is so cold there is a lot of fat on the fish which makes it tasty), and after a quick walk on the beach we called it a night.
