Day 38 – Durham to Kincardine, ON, and back to flat roads

We started off the morning wet and slightly sore and tired from the day before. We discovered that Adam’s right front rack had sheared off the bolt on the bottom and we completed an emergency repair with tie wraps. We cycled in to Durham for some coffee at Tim Hortons. The traffic was quite heavy and I nearly had a collision with a car as I enter the coffee shop. The perils of biking before coffee…

We planned out our route at the coffee shop after Adam realigned his front fender and headed towards Kincardine through the back roads. We had quite a few hills as we approached Walkerton but otherwise the cycling was beautiful with little traffic. I think that we found the hills more tiring because of the high mileage the day before. We had lunch beside a swollen Saugeen River in Walkerton and headed out towards Kincardine. We cut through the Greenock Swap Conservation Area and, although the road was unpaved, it was beautiful riding, with the trees leaning over the road. We crossed Bruce Road 1 and back into my training area from when we lived in Kincardine. The terrain flattened out and we had a great ride into Kincardine, despite a bit of a head wind. We arrived and stayed at our friend’s, Candace and Ryan’s for the night. They treated us to a great dinner and a hot shower. We topped the day off with a very complicated board game, Power Grid, which I promptly lost (this may have been due to the beer consumed while playing it). Thanks to Candace and Ryan for the wonderful hospitality!
