Day 32 – Carleton Place to Ompah

Day 33 – Carleton Place to Ompah

We said goodbye to Shona and headed back on the bike path towards Carleton Place. Katherine needed a coffee so we spotted a Tim Horton’s and pulled in. Except the line up was out the door so we proceeded towards the downtown area, where we found a cafe called Fat Boys. While we sat on the bench outside, we met the local Phys Ed high school teacher who we had a very nice chat with. He gave us the best directions out of town towards Ompah which was where we were headed towards. We took a few photos of Carleton Place and met a few more locals who wanted to chat to us about our trip. The people were very nice and we would have to say that it was by far the friendliest town that we have stopped at so far by the amount of people that wanted to talk to us.

The rest of the day was fairly quiet as we biked along the back roads. The roads were very quiet with little to no traffic. What we did encounter were a lot of hills. By the time we reached Ompah, we were quite tired and decided to rest at a Pavilion by their fire station/library. We had hardly seen any parks or stores for most of the day so we were glad to be able to put our feet up. As we rested, a man stopped by to ask us if we would like to use the fire station bathroom or get a cold drink as he was a volunteer firefighter. We were delighted and took up his offer.

We introduced ourselves and learned that his name was Pete. When he asked us where we were camping we told him we were not very sure as we had no idea where the nearest campground was. He then invited us to camp at his place that was just down the road. We biked down to his place and met him at his woodworking shop. He told us about some of the problems he had been working on and we headed up to his house where he showed us around and pointed out where we should set up our tent. He pointed out the path down to the local lake and headed back to his shop. We set up the tent and headed down for a well deserved swim and wash. We also met the local dog, Chester, who was quite friendly. As we were preparing to make dinner, his wife Ellen, drove up and asked who we were. We introduced ourselves and proceeded to make our dinner. Ellen and Pete shared some amazing corn on the cob with us and we had a great evening chatting and learning about their lives. Thank you to Ellen and Pete for the amazing hospitality and generosity!
