Day 6 – Meeting our first fellow touring cyclist

Sheffield to Mactaquac NB

Today started out fairly early, on the road by 9am from Casey’s campground in Sheffield, NB. We had a great chat with our new Aussie friend about adventures and obstacles to expect over the next few months…and we told her about the road between Coles Island and Moncton. She told us a very exciting story about an encounter with a bear in Northern Ontario, a goose attack on the Trans-Canada trail, and getting caught in a few snowstorms in western Canada (she started in April!! And you thought we were crazy)

We headed down the road toward Fredricton, approximately 30kms away. Our first stop was at a giant potato by the side of the road. We were unclear what the potato was advertising but took a picture anyway.

Our next stop was a roadside fruit and vegetable stand. They also had a petting zoo with all sorts of weird looking minature animals. We bought some snacks there (unfortunately, all of the baking had soy…Adam seemed to enjoy it, though). It started raining so we donned our rain gear. Then, this gentleman walked by and invited us to see a baby racoon that a woman had brought in…a bit strange that. Apparently she had rescued them after the crows attacked it??? The same man then gave us some advice about the roads along the river. Of course by now it stopped raining and we overheated in the raingear and promptly had to take it off.

We arrived in Fredricton and proceeded directly to the first bike shop we could find. There was an amazing old railway bridge across the river and some beautiful trails in Fredricton. We went to 3 bike shops before we finally found a replacement bike bottle holder for the one I broke falling off the bike in Shediac. As a bonus, they had bike shorts on sale, which we bought. I can’t remember the name of the shop but it was on Westmoreland…a must stop for any cyclist.

Off we went to the Superstore to load up…continuing our routine of one of us outside with the bikes and the other shopping, in contact via walki talkies. When I came out Adam’s dad had arrived. We then had a nice lunch by the water together. It was nice to meet up with our immediate family one last time before heading further west.

Adam found Wifi by the water….so we were a bit late leaving the city. Around 5:15pm, we headed for Mataquac Provincial Park…a 25km ride. There were some unanticiapted hills (what was wrong with the road following the water??) and we didn’t arrive until 7:30pm. We got a nice campsite near the water and I cooked up some amazing beef stir fry and veggies with couscous. My goal by the end of the trip is to master the 1 burner, 2 pot cooking repetoire!
