Day 5 – First Day in the Rain

Today we travelled from Coles Island, NB to Sheffield, NB, approximately 60kms. We started out a bit late, around 11:30, because we were still recovering from our adventures the day before. We rode to Coles Island and stopped at the Visitor’s Centre. It was in a really cool older covered bridge, but of course was not located where it appeared to be on the map!

Once there, it started raining pretty hard so we got the raingear out for its first real test. It worked really well and I was especially impressed by the bags, they kept everything bone dry. Go Ortlieb! After the visitors centre, we headed to Jemseg and then got on Route 105, the road that follows the Saint John River. We came across an awesome little produce place in Waterboro. We bought chocolate milk, rolls (soy free!) and a quart of strawberries and ate it all right outside. I think we were good for business because things picked up when we were outside eating!

Out we headed again, crossing the Jemseg River on what seemed like our very own bridge. We couldn’t figure out how to get to Upper Gagetown to the campground that we knew was there because there were no provisions for cyclist on Hwy 2.

We continued up the river (with the wind at our back – finally) until we came upon Casey’s campground and diner.

We were pretty excited because the food was super cheap and homemade. We set the tent up and headed in – alas it was not to be, the power went out and all we could order was coffee and strawberry shortcake (well Adam ate that and I had the low fat strawberries with sugar version). The folks at the restaurant were amazing though, they gave us free coffee and free coffee for the Australian cross country cyclist (our first fellow cyclist encounter – she was going west to east) that was also camping at the same spot! Thank you! On to Fredericton tomorrow!
