June 19th – Moncton to Coles Island NB
We met up with Shayda at our hotel in the morning before heading out. Shayda was super nice and took Katherine to the grocery store so we could stock up (while I contined to supervise the very important World Cup game). It was nice to see her one last time before they take off for Italy, which is going to be sometime in the next month. Unfortunately Rob was sent to Peru for his work so we didn’t get to see him.
After watching Japan suffer a respectible 1-0 loss to the Netherlands (they now just need to tie or beat the Danes next Thursday the 24th to advance), we had a bite to eat and hoped on our bikes. We knew it was going to be a hot and humid day, so we packed about 7 L of water and Gatorade (and we drank about 5L together).
Leaving Moncton, we took the old high highway towards Fredericton. The road was in great shape, and there was hardly any traffic the whole way. There was also basically nothing else. No stores, no gas stations. Just a few rural homes and cottages along the way. It was too bad because we really could have used a popsicle or an air conditioned building away from the bugs. It was a good thing we carried a lot of water. We also always carry enough food to last us a few days, but it’s amazing the amount of water you consumer when you are biking in the hot weather. It never usually gets this hot in NB, especially in June, so we aren’t expecting this weather to last much longer.
There were a few really spectacular views of the surrounding fields and forrest, and the lack of traffic made it all the more enjoyable. We even had our first wild life encounters today. We saw a deer cross the road about 40ft in front of us, and Katherine ended up stopping right beside a moose by the side of the road. Katherine didn’t notice til the moose ran away from her. I was a little ways behind and missed the whole event.
Since we started the day late (after lunch), we didn’t have a lot of time for breaks. Combined that with a head wind that really picked up at the end of day, it made for a really long ride, and a very sore bum. We were also close enough to the campground neat the end, that we kept pushing forward. When all was said and done, I felt like I do after a half-marathon, which is far from fantastic. It was quite the relief when we eventually arrived at the campground. We really needed a shower from all the sunscreen and sweat!
We had a few people come by to ask us about our trip. The campground was more of a semi-permanent RV park. We were the only ones camping in a tent. The evening was fairly uneventful, as after a shower and a meal of vegetarian spagetti, we promptly passed out.
